Iran tests stealth drone

TEHRAN, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Iranian air force commanders announced the successful test of a prototype stealth drone built by the domestic military.

Iran's Air Force Brig. Gen. Aziz Nasirzadeh said his forces launched a successful test of its first domestic stealth drone, dubbed Manta Ray, the Fars News Agency reports.

"The drone, due to its physical attributes and the material used in its body, cannot be detected by any radar," he added.

Nasirzadeh cautioned, however, that furthers tests were needed before the military could move forward with full production.

To mark Sacred Defense Week in September, Iranian defense officials announced they launched as many as 30 different military projects.

Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi said during the weeklong celebration that Iran unveiled a line of unmanned aerial vehicles and a missile-launching naval frigate dubbed Derafsh.

Defense officials note Iran has become self-sufficient in the production and manufacturing of the vessels and munitions necessary to protect itself.

Iran in 2009 announced it was working on stealth technology and Cruise-interceptor missiles.
